Ethical

Coffee. Culture. Meaning. The meaning part of their motto is shown through their direct relations hip practice. DOMA wants to know who is growing their coffee. They visit the farmers, cup coffees together, and share knowledge so that the farmers can produce the best coffee. To top it off, all of the coffee that DOMA purchases is above the fair trade price. They are committed to building and supporting equitable and sustainable trade relationships for the benefit of the farmers and their exporting cooperative, families, and communities.

ABOUT DOMA COFFEE COMPANY At DOMA, our primary mission is to deliver world-class quality coffee to our customers. Our tagline, “Coffee|Culture|Meaning,” is much more than a slogan—it’s a set of principles we have refined during our past decade of business. In a nutshell, these principles include: a devotion to handcrafted sustainability that extends to our roasting, purchasing, and operational practices; a passion for building a more just and sustainable world, not only in our community and region, but in the source countries where we do business; building transparent, direct relationships with farmers that go above an d beyond the standards of fair trade, cultivating a leadership role in our business community and our industry as a sustainable business.

We have found that far from detracting from our primary mission of providing excellent coffee, a commitment to sustainability serves our quality goals. As a result, our sustainable practices are inseparable from our business practices as a whole. In part, this is a reflection of our personal values, but it also reflects our belief that a well-planned sustainability program results in higher quality coffee and better business results.

An example of our fundamental commitment to sustainability is our choice of roaster. After years of roasting with a highly coveted but inefficient 1952 Probat, we decided in 2008 to seek a more energy efficient roasting solution. Our research led us to the Loring Smart Roast, which consumes 80 percent less energy than a standard roaster, while providing supreme control over the roast process. By searching for sustainable solutions, we enhanced the quality of our roast.
Equally important is our membership and leadership role in Cooperative Coffees. This green bean importing collective, where we buy 80% of our green coffee, is made up of 23 other small-scale roasters who share our commitment to quality and to direct relationships with growers. Cooperative Coffees always pays producers well above the standard price for fair trade coffee, while working with grower cooperatives that are certified fair trade and organic. A key component to the co-op is transparency. To that end, we give customers access to the direct paper trail for every coffee transaction through www.fairtradeproof.org
DOMA is an active member of The Fair Trade Federation, an organization which requires 100% commitment to fair trade practices. In addition, we have worked with Catholic Relief Services and USAID, visiting farms and aiding producers in roasting and cupping methods.
While ethical business practices and sustainable farming are central to our co-op’s mission, the direct trade relationship goes far deeper than these economic concerns. Working directly with farmers in source countries offers many benefits. By sharing information, both growers and roasters can maximize the quality of the crops and their processing for consumers. Moreover, by building personal relationships with growers, we seek to build for our globally traded product what has been accomplished in the local foods/community supported agriculture movement here at home. DOMA owners have made family visits, kids included, to our farmer partners where we not only trade information, but we build the human basis for long-term relationships that ensure a sustainable farm economy for growers—an ethic of “knowing your farmer” that we attempt to pass on to our customers.
We are constantly seeking ways of reducing the environmental footprint of our operations. Below are a few of the methods we’ve found that work for us:
• All cleaning products in our roasting plant are organic or green, and all paper products are 100% recycled paper.
• We’ve worked with a certified LEED consultant from Avista Utilities to reduce energy use in our current building. It’s not unusual to find the entire company working with the lights off on sunny days.
• Our vehicles are offset through TerraPass, www.terrapass.com, and we provide credits for employees who bike to work.
• DOMA headquarters, as well as our employees entire lives at home, are offset with a local utility program to invest in alternative energy.
• Our chaff is composted at a local CSA, and our burlap bags are donated to local farmers for use on their farms. We also repurpose our bags and turn them in to market and messenger bags.
• All our packaging is compostable, and we offer a reusable bag option so that both consumers and wholesale accounts may reuse the same kraft bags.
• A couple of years ago we started using steel cans as the ultimate in recyclable packaging. Currently available on a limited basis, we are working on a reuse/refill program.
