Students, listen up! What started out as a school project for Amanda Judge burgeoned into what is no w a full-blown social enterprise. In the fall of 2008, Amanda set about interviewing women living in rural Ecuador about their survival strategies in the face of poverty. The project was intended to result in an academic paper that presented potential programs to reduce poverty in the area. Emerging unexpectedly inspired, Amanda turned her ideas into an employment generating social enterprise. With a background in jewelry design and acquired knowledge through her interviews about the jewelry Ecuadorians made out of rainforest seeds, Amanda started the Andean Collection. She realized that opening the global market for jewelry made out of natural materials would bring sustainable change to communities. The Andean Collection works with 70 artisans across eight workshops in Ecuador and is a member of th e Fair Trade Federation. They offer business trainings and no interest loans to their artisans as an investment in the future of these diligent workers' lives.
