DESCRIPTION These beautiful, flora- pattern, wool belts are hand-made by women's cooperatives in rural areas of Peru. Each belt is a one-of-a-kind work of beautiful craftsmanship using a contemporary take on traditional Andean techniques. The work is done according to fair trade guidelines; most of the artisans sew in their homes or at a communal studio workshop and are paid a living wage. These belts take two days to make and each is a unique expression of the woman who made it. The medium size belt measures 40" x 2" and fits 28"- 37" waist/hips.

Artisan Group:
The women who embroider these belts are from Ayacucho, Peru, a region hit hard in the 1980's by the Shining Path terrorist group. After the group was suppressed by the government in the 1990's, various NGOs went to Ayacucho to help the women who had been raped and abused. Small artisan groups were formed to create products using ancestral embroidery techniques. Ayacucho is now a peaceful place with artisans enjoying steady employment. Jenny Krauss works directly with these artisans to import their products and support their community. Read More...

ABOUT 12 SMALL THINGS 12 Small Things is a collection of fashionable, fair trade products supporting artisans in economically challenged communities around the world. The twelve artisan groups featured each season have been introduced to us by fair trade wholesalers, nonprofit organizations and consultants who work directly with the craftspeople. We strive to represent artisans from different parts of the world, whose stories we find compelling and worth sharing. Occasionally we also feature products from American artisans who donate a portion of their proceeds to help to support non-profit organizations in their c ommunities. Our products are chosen for their quality and value with an eye for both contemporary and classic style. By supporting these organizations and buying their fairly traded products, we are helping these artisans earn a living wage, send their children to schools, and afford daily necessities that we often take for granted. We hope you love our collection as much as we do and will share 12 Small Things with your family and friends. From small beginnings come great things.
