DESCRIPTION This wonderful necklace can be worn hanging long and low, or looped together as the occasion or outfit demands. In northern Mozambique, rural artisans salvage scraps of mpingo wood - African blackwood - and convert them into lustrous wooden beads. Mpingo is the wood of choice for the world's finest woodwind instruments, and it turns and carves beautifully. Small creations like beads utilize bits of wood left over from other products, or branches washed up in riverbeds. Necklace is 45" long, comes with 13 beads and has a small metal fastener.

Artisan Group:
Founded in June 1995 by Leslie Mittelberg, Swahili Imports is a small company whose orders provide numerous African artisans with a vital supplemental income. They work with producers across Africa who value their natural environment and employ sustainable methods of production. A member of the Fair Trade Federation, Swahili Imports helps ensure fair wages, educational opportunities and social and environmental responsibility in their work with African artisans. ABOUT 12 SMALL THINGS 12 Small Things is a collection of fashionable, fair trade products supporting artisans in economically challenged communities around the world. The twelve artisan groups featured each season have been introduced to us by fair trade wholesalers, nonprofit organizations and consultants who work directly with the craftspeople. We strive to represent artisans from different parts of the world, whose stories we find compelling and worth sharing. Occasionally we also feature products from American artisans who donate a portion of their proceeds to help to support non-profit organizations in their c ommunities. Our products are chosen for their quality and value with an eye for both contemporary and classic style. By supporting these organizations and buying their fairly traded products, we are helping these artisans earn a living wage, send their children to schools, and afford daily necessities that we often take for granted.
